Connecting Wirelessly with the D-Link DSL-2640B

Wireless security is turned off by default on the D-Link DSL 2640B. We strongly recommend enabling this to prevent unauthorised use of your wireless connection.

To connect via a wireless link make sure that your computer is equipped with a wireless adapter. Check if your wireless adapter is installed and working properly. If you've not yet established a connection to the Internet see Installing the D-Link DSL-2640B.

Windows

  • Click on the Start menu.
  • Select Connect To.
  • Choose Wireless Network Connection or select the D-Link 2640 B Router. (This is called dlink by default.)
  • Click Connect.

Mac OS X

  • Click on the Wireless Signal and turn On the AirPort.
  • Click Join Other Network.
  • Click Show Networks.
  • Select the D-link DSL-2640B Router (This is called dlink by default.) and then click Join.

Once you have established a connection you'll need to setup a Wireless Security Key to secure your connection.

  • Open your web browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.
  • Log on to the Router with username admin and password admin.
  • Click Setup and then Wireless Setup.












Click Secure My Wireless Network.








You can change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) to anything you like between 1 - 32 characters long.

The wireless channel is set to Auto Channel by default and it's recommended to keep these this setting.

Encryption is set to none by default. It's recommended that you use WPA-PSK but if your adapter doesn't support WPA-PSK, it's recommended that you use WEP 64 bit. The WPA/WEP Keys are like a password, you will need to enter this on any PC or games console you want to use on the Internet.

Click Apply Settings to save your changes.

















A pop-up will appear asking you to write down the Wireless Network Name (SSID) and WPA-PSK or WEP 64 bit password.

You'll need this information to reconnect using the wireless security key or passphrase used. Click Close Window.











Windows

  • Click on the Start menu, select Connect To or select Wireless Network Connection.
  • Refresh the Network List and click on the D-Link 2640 B. (This is called dlink by default.)
  • You'll then need to enter your wireless Security Key/Passphrase.
  • Click Connect.
  • Click Close.

Mac OS X

  • Click on the Wireless Signal and turn on the AirPort.

  • You'll then need to enter your wireless Security Key/Passphrase.
  • Click Join.

Installing the D-Link 2640B

Before installing the D-Link DSL-2640B wireless router it's necessary to establish a connection via the ethernet cable first.


















Follow the steps below to connect via ethernet:

  • Connect the power cable.
  • Connect the blue ethernet cable to your computer and router.
  • Connect the DSL cable to the ADSL port and then to the microfilter which should be connected to your main telephone socket.
  • Make sure that the power, ethernet and ADSL lights are switched on.
  • Open your web browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.
  • Type admin in the username and password fields before clicking Log in.






















You should now see the ADSL Setup page. Click the Setup Wizard button.























Click Next on the WELCOME TO D-LINK SETUP WIZARD screen.




















You can change the router factory default password from admin to anything you like. Click Skip if you want to leave this for now. Remember that this will be restored to factory settings if you reset the router.

















Enter the following settings:

  • Country: United Kingdom
  • ISP Provider: Others
  • VPI: 0
  • VCI: 38
  • Connection Type: PPPoA VC-Mux




















Enter your broadband username and broadband password, then confirm your broadband password.


















Now restart the router to save your changes.

















Once the router has restarted, click OK. The information sign will now change and say Internet Online.

Common Troubleshooting Tips:

  • Power off the router after any changes are made, wait for five seconds before switching on again.
  • Close and reopen your web browser if you cannot access the router homepage.
  • Refresh the Wireless Network List if you can't find the D-Link DSL-2640B. (This is called dlink by default.)

Getting started with the D-Link DSL-2640B

Before installing the D-Link DSL-2640B wireless router, please ensure that:
  • Your Telephone line has been configured and activated for broadband.
  • You have your broadband username and password.
  • If you're replacing an existing broadband modem, it must be unplugged from your line and uninstalled from your computer.
  • Your computer meets the minimum specification required.

Please ensure that you have the following items in the D-Link DSL-2640B box:























  • One DSL-2640B ADSL2 + Router
  • One Power Adapter
  • One CD-Rom containing the user guide
  • One DSL cable (Grey)
  • One Ethernet cable (Blue)
  • Two Broadband microfilters

Plug a microfilter into every telephone socket that has telephony equipment attached to it (e.g. phone, fax, answering machine, caller ID, cordless phone base unit, Sky Digital).

To install the D-Link 2640B:

  • Connect the power supply and DSL cable into the router.
  • Plug the opposite end of the DSL cable into the DSL socket of the broadband microfilter.
  • Wait until the DSL light is solid in colour.

If the DSL light is OFF or keeps flashing, please check the following:

  • Make sure that all cables are connected correctly.
  • You're using the DSL cable supplied with the router.
  • Try using another microfilter.
  • Disconnect all other equipment (telephones, Skybox, alarms, etc) from your telephone line and test again.
